Aquarium size and shape

Arowanas are large, active surface swimmers. Prioritize a long, wide aquarium with unobstructed turning room and plan around the adult fish—not the juvenile size at purchase. The final system must suit the species and individual.

Use a secure, gap-free lid

Arowanas are powerful jumpers. Covers, cable openings, feeding ports, and equipment gaps must be secured before the fish arrives.

Filtration and water quality

Use mature biological filtration, strong oxygenation, and a consistent maintenance schedule. Test temperature, pH, ammonia, nitrite, and nitrate. Stable, clean water is more important than repeatedly chasing a single number with chemicals.

Feeding and observation

Offer an appropriately sized, varied diet and remove uneaten food. Record appetite and behavior. A sudden change in feeding, swimming, breathing, or appearance should trigger immediate water testing and consultation with a qualified aquatic-health professional.

Compatibility

Temperament and space requirements vary by species and individual. Never assume a tank mate is safe. Have a separation plan and avoid overcrowding.
